How does the Canadian mortgage stress test calculator work?

This calculator sends you to the interactive stress-test inputs, where you enter the mortgage amount, contract rate, amortization, income, housing costs and other debts. It compares the qualifying payment at the higher of the mortgage contract rate plus 2% or the applicable minimum qualifying rate, then estimates GDS and TDS. Results are estimates, not an approval.

Renewals with the same lender normally do not require a new stress test. For an uninsured straight switch between federally regulated lenders, OSFI no longer prescribes the minimum qualifying rate, but the new lender still applies its own underwriting. Changes to the loan amount or amortization can alter treatment. Confirm current requirements before relying on an estimate.
